Michael J. Barber, MD, PhD, FACC, FAHA, FHRS

Medical Director

As a traditionally trained MD with over 35 years of clinical experience my mission through the years was to provide the best care possible to the people who entrusted their health to me. I spent over two and a half decades treating my patients using accepted “mainstream” treatment algorithms. Approximately 10 years ago I began to question the role of a pure allopathic (traditional) approach to clinical practice and began to research and utilize a more integrative practice style. This culminated in the development of a philosophy that neither traditional nor complementary medicine provided all the answers when it came to optimal patient care. As a result, I pursued an education path that assisted me in evolving my medical practice from the traditionally based approach to one utilizing all aspects of allopathic and complementary/integrative medicine. This culminated in my ‘retiring’ from my established medical practice to become the Medical Director of Strata Integrated Wellness Spa at the Garden of the Gods. Here I have been allowed to pursue my upgraded mission to develop a truly Integrative Medical Program by recruiting clinicians all of whom believe in the use of the best evidence-based allopathic and complementary medicine approaches. This will allow us to create a unique environment of inter-clinician communication and to provide better, more comprehensive treatment plans. The end-game and overall mission of Strata Integrated Wellness Spa is to produce optimal clinical outcomes for all clients.

Michael J. Barber, MD, PhD, FACC, FHRS, FAHA is a board-certified Internist, Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist, former managing partner of Colorado Springs Cardiologists and now the Medical Director of Strata Integrated Wellness Spa at the Garden of the Gods Resort and Club in Colorado Springs (Strata). He received his A.B. in Biology from Wabash College where he was graduated cum laude and subsequently obtained a PhD in Cardiovascular and Exercise Physiology from Loyola University of Chicago. After graduate school he went to the Indiana University School of Medicine where he received his MD and then performed his internship and residency at the University of Virginia Hospitals before completing clinical fellowships in Cardiology and Electrophysiology at Duke University. He returned to the University of Virginia as an Assistant Professor of Medicine prior to moving to Colorado Springs to join Colorado Springs Cardiologists.

During his time at Colorado Springs Cardiologists, Dr. Barber developed a reputation as a recognized physician of clinical excellence. He has been listed in America’s “Top Doctors” and “Best Doctors” as well as in multiple editions of Marquis “Who’s Who” in Medicine, Healthcare, Science, Education and The World. He is a recommended/preferred physician by HealthGrades and has been awarded multiple “Top Doctor” honors by Colorado Springs Magazine as well as a “Best Doctor for Executives” by Colorado Business Magazine. Dr. Barber is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), the Heart Rhythm Society (FHRS) and the American Heart Association (FAHA).

Approximately 12 years ago he became interested in a more integrative approach toward the management of his patients. This ultimately led to him to leave his private practice to co-found and become the Medical Director for the Strata. To enhance his understanding of Integrative Medicine he enrolled in the first cohort of the Duke Leadership Program in Integrative Medicine where he came to thoroughly appreciate the role of both traditional and complementary medicine in the care and management of patients. This insight has allowed him to recognize outstanding practitioners in the field of complementary medicine and allowed Strata to recruit only the best clinicians.
